Question:

347 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children if the Irish College of General Practitioners has been in contact with his Department regarding the continuing shortage of supply of tetanus vaccine. [24302/01]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 346 and 347 together.

There is currently a world wide shortage of tetanus vaccine due to one of the major suppliers discontinuing production earlier this year. The Eastern Regional Health Authority which acts as the central purchasing agency for vaccines on behalf of all health boards, is working in conjunction with the existing supplier to ensure that there is sufficient product to meet essential needs. The ERHA is endeavouring to secure further supplies of tetanus vaccine as a matter of urgency.

My Department has consulted the Immunisation Advisory Committee of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland with regard to further advice on tetanus prophylaxis. The committee has recommended that a careful history of tetanus toxoid administration be taken to ensure that no unnecessary tetanus toxoid is given. This advice has been issued to each director of public health, asking him or her to bring it to the attention of all appropriate health care personnel in his or her area as a matter of urgency.

I confirm that the Irish College of General Practitioners has been in contact with my Department in relation to tetanus vaccine and that officials from my Department met recently with the ICGP to update them on the current situation.
