409 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of gardaí based in Enfield, Mullingar, Athlone, Tullamore and Birr; the number of gardaí based in Celbridge, County Kildare; if he has satisfied himself that Garda strength in ratio to population in Celbridge is equal to that of the other towns mentioned; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25178/01]

I am informed by the Garda authorities, who are responsible for the detailed allocation of personnel and resources to individual areas, that the current personnel strength (all ranks) of Enfield, Mullingar, Athlone, Tullamore, Birr and Celbridge Garda stations as at 1 October, 2001 is as follows:

Enfield

Mullingar

Athlone

I am further informed by the Garda authorities that up to date population statistics are not available.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

410 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he has received any requests for a substantial increase in Garda strength in Celbridge, County Kildare; if the current strength is below or on par with various other towns with a similar population; if he will ensure the provision of adequate personnel to provide 24 hour foot and mobile patrols; if his attention has been drawn to the need to improve policing levels in towns and villages in the greater Dublin area; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25179/01]

I am informed by the Garda authorities, who are responsible for the detailed allocation of personnel and resources to individual areas, that Celbridge Garda station is in the Carlow-Kildare division with its district headquarters at Naas station. The current personnel strength (all ranks) of Celbridge Garda station as at 1 October 2001 is 19, compared to a figure of 12 on 31 December 1997. This represents an increase of seven or 58.33% in the personnel allocated to Celbridge during that period. There are 18 vehicles attached to the district of Naas, with two vehicles assigned to Celbridge station. The allocation of vehicles to Celbridge station is comparable to areas with similar size and population throughout the country. Garda manpower assigned to the greater Dublin area, together with overall policing arrangements and operational strategy, is continually monitored and reviewed. Such monitoring ensures that optimum use is made of Garda resources, and the best possible Garda service is provided to the general public. I am further informed by the Garda authorities that the situation will be kept under review and, when additional manpower next becomes available, the needs of Celbridge will be fully considered within the overall context of the needs of Garda districts throughout the country.

Austin Currie

Question:

411 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if the review of opening hours of Rathcoole Garda station, County Dublin has been completed; if so, the result of the review; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25180/01]

I am informed by the Garda authorities, who are responsible for the detailed allocation of resources to individual areas, that the position regarding the opening hours of Rathcoole Garda station has been reviewed and that it has been decided that they should remain unchanged. Local Garda management are of the view that any extension of the current opening hours would reduce the number of gardaí available for mobile and beat patrols. The current personnel strength of Rathcoole Garda station as at 1 October 2001 is 23 (all ranks). This compares to a figure of 11 on 31 December 1997 and represents an increase of 109% in the personnel allocated to Rathcoole.
