Vol. 543 No. 5

Written Answers. - Garda Investigations.

Jim Higgins

Question:

144 Mr. Higgins (Mayo) asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he has received an indication from the Garda recently as to when they expect investigations into alleged Garda misconduct in County Donegal are likely to be concluded; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25464/01]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the investigation conducted by Assistant Commissioner Carty has been concluded and a file submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions. To date, five persons have been arrested and charged before the courts with offences arising from the investigation into this matter. Any decision on further action must necessarily await receipt of the DPP's further directions on the matter. I am further informed that the Commissioner has initiated further inquiries into suspected misconduct by a number of members of the Garda Síochána in the Donegal division. While every effort is being made to conclude these inquiries expeditiously, it is not possible at this time to indicate when investigations will be completed.
