Vol. 544 No. 1

Written Answers. - Youth Projects.

David Stanton

Question:

206 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of additional personnel which will be made available to organise projects to establish a Garda youth diversion project in Midleton and Cobh; the additional resources which will be made available; the planned duration of the projects; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28198/01]

I am pleased to have been able to announce a new Garda youth diversion project, GYDP, for Midleton and Cobh, County Cork, which brings to 64 the number of projects now established, compared to just 12 in 1997.

It is envisaged that the Midleton-Cobh GYDP will have available to it one full-time youth worker employed by a youth organisation. All inclusive funding for a new GYDP is usually of the order of £60,000, (€76,184) per annum, subject to overall financial resources with my Department. For the remainder of the current year, £25,000, (€31,743) has been allocated to the Midleton-Cobh GYDP.

The project is funded under the national development plan 2000-2006, and I anticipate that adequate funding will be made available next year to ensure that this and all the other GYDPs continue their operations in 2002.
