Vol. 544 No. 1

Written Answers. - Higher Education Grants.

Paul McGrath

Question:

257 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Education and Science if a three year income averaging system is allowable in assessing applications for higher education grants; the details of such a system; and if such a system was previously in place. [28135/01]

The assessment of means under the student support schemes is based on gross income for the previous tax year, with certain specified social welfare and health board payments being disregarded. A three-year income averaging system has not been used in the calculation of reckonable income under the schemes of student support. There are no plans at present to alter the method of computing reckonable income for the purposes of the schemes.
