Vol. 544 No. 3

Written Answers. - Pension Provisions.

Richard Bruton

Question:

427 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if, further to Parliamentary Question No. 233 of 14 December 2000, he will indicate whether the publication of the report of the Commission on Public Service Pensions has put him in a better position to revise the terms of the Garda pension scheme; and if he will permit former gardaí who later marry to buy back into the entitlement for cover for spouses and children. [28829/01]

The Minister for Finance announced the Government's response to the final report of the Commission on Public Service Pensions on 28 September 2001. The Government has decided to accept the thrust of the package of reforms recommended by the commission and intends to establish a working group to advise on implementation as provided for in the Programme for Prosperity and Fairness. The operational details of the implementation of the commission recommendations will be agreed by the Government following receipt of a report from the implementation working group, to be made within six months of this decision. Parallel structures, subject to the same timeframe and remit, will be established in the case of the Garda Síochána.
