Vol. 545 No. 1

Written Answers. - Crime Prevention.

Austin Currie

Question:

286 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the steps he will take to assist the gardaí at Neilstown shopping centre, Dublin 22, to combat drug dealing (details supplied); and if he will make a statement on the matter. [29537/01]

I am advised by the Garda authorities that the advisory committee that was established by the Garda Commissioner to evaluate CCTV applications has received an application in respect of a CCTV system for Neilstown village centre. The application is currently under consideration – together with applications from other towns and cities.

I am also advised by the Garda authorities that the problems of drug abuse/anti-social behaviour at the Neilstown village centre are monitored on a daily basis and resources are deployed appropriately.

In this regard, uniform patrols are performed at the Neilstown village centre and its environs on a daily basis. The district drug unit constantly monitors problems at the area through covert and overt operations. The divisional crime task force and divisional traffic unit also perform regular patrols in the area. The gardaí in Ronanstown also work closely with local anti-drug programmes such as the Clondalkin drugs task force, Tower Project, Clondalkin Addiction Support Programme, the GRAFT Programme, Cairdeas and Cumas.

I am further advised that gardaí, in conjunction with South Dublin County Council, identify families in the environs who are involved in anti-social behaviour pursuant to the Housing (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 1997.
