Vol. 552 No. 1

Written Answers. - Medical Cards.

Enda Kenny

Question:

403 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Health and Children if it is in order for general practitioners to accept or to charge medical card holders for medical advice and services; the penalties that apply in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11965/02]

General practitioners who hold GMS contracts with their local health boards must not seek or accept money from medical card holders in respect of routine treatment. This forms part of one of the conditions of the contract which general practitioners sign upon entry into the scheme. If the Deputy is aware of any such infringement of the contract by any general practitioner, I would be obliged if he would forward the details to me and I will be happy to have the relevant health board investigate and take any action necessary.
