63 Mr. Timmins asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if there is a scheme in his Department whereby a community group can apply for funding to upgrade a local community hall or obtain funding for other community projects; if a contact or liaison person in his Department co-ordinates such an application; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12488/02]

There is no scheme in my Department whereby a community group can apply for funding to upgrade a local community hall. However, it is open to community groups to apply for grants in respect of the following schemes operated under the control of my Department.

The neighbourhood scheme operated by the forest service offers considerable support to local authorities, community groups, environmental NGOs and private woodland owners to develop appropriate woodland amenities in and around villages, towns and cities. Voluntary and community sector cross-Border co-operation strategies and projects relating to fishing and aquaculture may be considered for support under the EU Programme for Peace and Reconciliation in Northern Ireland and the Border region, 2000-2004 – PEACE II.
