Vol. 553 No. 2

Written Answers. - Flood Relief.

Denis Naughten

Question:

178 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development if he will address the fodder crisis in the Shannon Basin in view of the dramatic flooding which has taken place over the past number of weeks; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13486/02]

The threat of flooding has been a feature of farming especially in the Shannon Basin for many years. The underlying recurring problem of the Shannon flooding needs to be addressed in the long term by the formulation of comprehensive measures involving all the official agencies concerned. The difficulties faced by farmers in the Shannon Basin in recent weeks have also had to be faced in varying severity by farmers in many parts of the country.
