Vol. 553 No. 5

Written Answers. - Electronic Voting.

John Dennehy

Question:

374 Mr. Dennehy asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government his views on the operation of the electronic voting experiment in three constituencies in the general election; his plans to use it on a nationwide basis in the proposed referendum on the Treaty of Nice later in 2002; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14630/02]

A review is being carried out of the use of the electronic voting and vote counting system in the three constituencies at the general election. When this is completed, I will consider whether the system should be used at elections throughout the country. The system would not be ready for use countrywide at the proposed referendum on the Treaty of Nice. However, I will consider the use of the system in some additional constituencies in this proposed referendum.
