Vol. 553 No. 6

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Appeals.

Michael Ring

Question:

260 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Social and Family Affairs when an appeal for persons (details supplied) in County Mayo will be heard. [14847/02]

The rate of unemployment assistance payable to the persons concerned was reduced following a review by a social welfare inspector who reported that she now had new income from self-employment.

Her appeal against this decision to the social welfare appeals office was considered by an appeals officer who has decided that an oral hearing of the appeal is required. This will be arranged as soon as possible. The person concerned will be advised of the date and venue for the hearing when the necessary arrangements have been made.
Under social welfare legislation decisions in relation to claims must be made by deciding officers and appeals officers. These officers are statutorily appointed and I have no role in regard to making such decisions.
