Vol. 554 No. 5

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Denis Naughten

Question:

646 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Education and Science if his Department will approve the appointment of a personal assistant for a person (details supplied) in County Roscommon in line with a recommendation of their educational psychologist 12 months ago; the reason this appointment has not been made; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16535/02]

My Department allocates resource teaching posts, special needs assistant posts and additional teaching hours to second level schools to cater for special needs pupils. Applications are made to my Department by the relevant school authorities. Each case is considered on its merits and determined on the advice of the psychological service.

To date, my Department has not received an application from the school authorities for additional resources to cater for the needs of the pupil referred to by the Deputy. If such an application is received, it will be referred to the psychological service for a report and, as soon as the report has been received and considered, my Department will notify the school authorities of the decision.
