Vol. 555 No. 5

Written Answers. - Traveller Community.

Charlie O'Connor

Question:

360 Mr. O'Connor asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the action he has taken to ensure or monitor the implementation of the recommendations contained in the 1995 task force report on the Traveller community; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19220/02]

A committee to monitor and co-ordinate the implementation of the recommendations of the Task Force on the Travelling Community was established in 1998. The committee, which is chaired by my Department, is representative of Traveller interests, social partners and relevant Departments. Since its establishment the committee has met on 26 occasions.

As part of its terms of reference, the monitoring committee is required to draw up and submit to Government from time to time a progress report on the implementation of the recommendations of the task force. The first progress report was submitted to Government in 2000. In addition, since September 2002 the monitoring of commitments to Travellers was put on the agenda of the Senior Officials Group on Social Inclusion.
