Vol. 560 No. 1

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

357 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Education and Science if he has made a decision to allow St. Anne's national school, Shankill, County Dublin, proceed to tender stage for its building project; if his attention has been drawn to the huge dissatisfaction in the school community at the continuing delay on this project; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1139/03]

The 2003 capital programme has now been published and full details in relation to indi vidual projects are available on my Department's website at www.education.ie.

The project at St. Anne's national school, Shankill, County Dublin, is at an advanced stage of architectural planning. On the basis of the budgetary allocation it was not possible to include it in the new projects to start construction in 2003. The project will be considered again in the context of the 2004 capital programme.

Question:

358 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will receive a deputation from a school (details supplied) in County Wicklow to discuss the school's building and facilities requirements; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1140/03]

The 2003 capital programme has been published and full details in relation to individual projects are available on my Department's website at www.education.ie.

In view of the scale of the programme and having regard to the level of financial commitments to be met from projects already in construction, the Department does not envisage that it will be in a position during this year to initiate architectural planning on any further large scale building projects including St. Brendan's college, Bray.

In light of this approach to the schools capital programme, it would be unfair to other schools for me to become involved in discussions on individual projects or to receive a deputation from a particular school as this might create the impression that decisions were going to be taken on building projects on the basis of criteria other than the objective criteria outlined by my Department.
