Question:905 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the amount of money which was taken in for the full year of 2002 from the plastic bag levy. [1377/03]

Plastic bag levy receipts remitted to my Department by the Revenue Commissioners in respect of the first two accounting periods, March to September 2002, amounted to almost €7.2 million.
The start-up costs incurred by the Revenue Commissioners relating to the introduction of the plastic bag levy together with the cost of the public information campaign undertaken by my Department amounted to approximately €1.56 million and were paid from these receipts.
First receipts in respect of the third accounting period, which ended on 31 December 2002, will be remitted by mid-February.
