Vol. 560 No. 2

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Seán Ó Fearghaíl

Question:

48 Mr. Ó Fearghaíl asked the Minister for Education and Science the reason there has been a six month delay in approving a special needs assistant for a person (details supplied) in County Kildare attending a post-primary school in Kildare in view of the fact that this person had required and availed of such support at primary level. [2203/03]

My Department allocates resource posts, special needs assistant posts and concessionary teaching hours to second level schools to cater for the needs of special needs pupils. Applications for such support are made to my Department by the relevant school authorities. Each application is considered on the basis of the assessed needs of the pupils in question and determined on the advice of the psychological service.

My Department has approved the allocation of additional teaching and special needs assistant hours to the school concerned to cater for the needs of the pupil referred to by the Deputy.
