Vol. 560 No. 2

Written Answers. - Road Signage.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

88 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government his plans for the improvement of road signage, in view of the negative feedback emanating from tourists who visit Ireland; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2059/03]

The 2003 non-national road grants provision for local authorities includes, for the first time, a provision of €5.1 million for a regional road signposting programme. This initiative commences a five year programme of works and delivers on the commitment in An Agreed Programme for Government to put in place a new five year plan to ensure that non-national roads are properly signposted. Yesterday I announced the initial allocations under this new programme as follows: Donegal County Council –€1.45 million; Galway County Council –€1.30 million; Kerry County Council –€0.75 million; Sligo County Council –€0.45 million; Wexford County Council –€1.15 million.
