Vol. 564 No. 5

Written Answers - Beef Industry.

120.Ms Enright asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the way in which he intends to ensure the safe disposal of meat and bone includ ing specified risk material in the future; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9884/03]

All meat and bonemeal produced in Ireland including SRM is rendered into meat and bonemeal and is sent abroad for disposal in other member states in compliance with the requirements of EU veterinary and environmental legislation. In the absence of domestic means of disposing of MBM, this will continue to be the main disposal route for MBM. My Department will continue to apply all necessary controls in co-operation with the appropriate authorities in other member states to ensure the continued safe disposal of all MBM, including MBM derived from specified risk material.

My Department will continue to monitor any new domestic disposal options that become available, to ensure compliance with all EU and national veterinary regulations. Any such proposals will also have to comply with the requirements of the environmental and planning authorities.
