Vol. 567 No. 3

Written Answers. - Disease Levies.

Denis Naughten

Question:

64 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food his plans to change the disease levies; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13919/03]

In the context of the agreement with the farming organizations, it was agreed that value for money reviews of expenditure will be carried out during 2003 with a view to identifying savings while protecting consumer health, animal health and animal welfare and complying with statutory requirements. In the light of these efficiencies disease levies will be reviewed from 1 January 2004.

I should also point out that a provision of €216 million has been made in the 2003 Estimates for Exchequer expenditure on animal disease of which €67 million relates to TB and Brucellosis eradication. At current rates, the disease levies will bring in some €20 million in 2003.
