Vol. 567 No. 7

Written Answers. - Satellite Transmission.

Thomas P. Broughan

Question:

186 Mr. Broughan asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources if he has considered the far-reaching implications of the decision by the BBC to offer its full range of services on an unencrypted satellite, the footprint of which will cover Ireland from the end of June 2003; if his attention has been drawn to the adverse impact this will have on the indigenous broadcasting sector and on cable and MDS companies; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15038/03]

I am considering the implications, from a range of perspectives, of the BBC's decision to offer its service on unencrypted satellite. The BBC's decision, especially if other UK terrestrial broadcasters follow suit, has implications for Irish audiences, Irish broadcasters and for those who sell television services in the Irish market. The BBC decision will also inform my consideration of the options for the introduction of digital terrestrial television in Ireland.
