Vol. 568 No. 1

Written Answers. - Traffic Management.

Denis Naughten

Question:

636 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Transport his plans and timescale for the introduction of metric road signs; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15867/03]

Responsibility for the provision of road traffic signs is vested in the road authorities under the Road Traffic Acts. The European Communities (Units of Measurement) (Amendment) Regulations 2001 (S.I. No. 283 of 2001) and the European Communities (Units of Measurement) (Amendment) Regulations 2002 (S.I. No. 619 of 2002), made by the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment specify that imperial units of measurement may not be used on road traffic signs for speed and speed measurement after 31 December 2004 and on road traffic signs for distance after 31 December 2005. It is intended that the changeover to metric units on traffic signs will be implemented by the road authorities well within those statutory timeframes.
