Vol. 568 No. 1

Written Answers. - Departmental Staff.

Denis Naughten

Question:

638 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Transport the increase in the number of civil servants in his Department who cycle to work since the launch of his campaign on the issue; if he intends to extend this programme to other Departments; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15869/03]

The DTO policy document, A Platform for Change, recognises the contribution that cycling can make to responding to the transportation needs of the greater Dublin area. The 2003 Estimates provided for €40 million in respect of traffic management grants administered by the DTO to fund measures such as QBCs, the strategic cycle network, pedestrian routes, traffic signal control systems and the development of local integrated land use and transport framework plans. Already, more than 170 km. of dedicated cycleways have been provided. The allocations of funding to individual projects is a matter for the DTO. No survey has been yet been carried out by my Department.
