Vol. 568 No. 1

Written Answers. - Prisoner Transfers.

Jack Wall

Question:

690 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the position regarding the possible transfer of a person (details supplied) to Portlaoise Prison for personal and family reasons from Wheatfield Prison; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15968/03]

The person referred to is serving a ten year prison sentence, which was imposed at the Court of Criminal Appeal on 16 December 1999, for possession of an explosive substance with intent and was initially committed to Portlaoise Prison. As the Deputy will be aware, Portlaoise Prison accommodates a number of different subversive groupings. The person referred to has disassociated from the particular subversive grouping with which he had been previously connected. This eventually gave rise to his transfer to Wheatfield Prison. I do not feel it is appropriate to return this prisoner to Portlaoise Prison. I have, however, approved his transfer to Cork Prison for operational and security reasons. This transfer took place on 7 June 2003. His case will be kept under review.
