Vol. 568 No. 1

Written Answers. - Water Quality.

Enda Kenny

Question:

702 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for the Environment Heritage and Local Government the information his Department has received relating to the quality of drinking water in Carraroe and Callaheigue, County Galway; when it is envisaged that a new water supply system will be in place for Carraroe and Callaheigue; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15295/03]

The Environmental Protection Agency's 2001 report on drinking water quality, a copy of which is available in the Oireachtas Library, indicates no exceedance of any health related parameter in the case of the public drinking water supply in Carraroe, which I understand also serves Callagheigue. To rationalise and improve water supplies in the area, it is intended to replace the existing source and to serve Carraroe and surrounding areas from the proposed Costelloe regional water supply scheme. This scheme is included in my Department's Water Services Investment Programme 2002-2004, as a scheme to advance through planning. I approved Galway County Council's proposals for updating the preliminary report for the scheme last April and the submission of the updated report is now awaited.
