Vol. 569 No. 5

Written Answers. - Industrial Development.

Denis Naughten

Question:

61 Mr. Naughten asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the action she has taken to date to fulfil her commitment to staff that a plant (details supplied) at Roosky County Roscommon will be rebuilt; the discussions she has had with the company; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [18143/03]

The rebuilding of any plant is a matter for the individual company concerned and is not a matter in which I could make a commitment. The company in question has been examining the possibility of rebuilding its pig slaughtering plant in Roosky, County Roscommon, following the fire in the plant in May 2002. However, it was always anticipated that it would be some time before a final decision was taken. In this regard, Enterprise Ireland has been in regular contact with the company on its future plans.

As part of a proposed investment in the rationalisation of slaughtering facilities in order to improve competitiveness, the company announced on Wednesday, 25 June 2003 that it does not propose to rebuild the slaughtering facility at Roosky but will develop its Roscrea and Edenderry plants with the creation of an additional 150 jobs. However, the cannery at Roosky will also be developed and a number of growth initiatives are being explored with Enterprise Ireland.
