Vol. 571 No. 1

Written Answers. - Liquor Licensing Laws.

Seán Haughey

Question:

1136 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform his plans to restrict the sale of alcohol in petrol stations; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19968/03]

The sale of intoxicating liquor at garage forecourts and motorway facilities was considered by the Commission on Liquor Licensing in its second interim report and again in its final report.

The commission noted the absence of clear evidence regarding the consequences of the sale of alcohol at garage forecourts, but expressed concern that the sale and supply of alcohol in refreshment facilities for road users could have serious implications for road safety. It recommended that the matter be kept under review and that serious consideration be given to restricting the sale of alcohol in motorway facilities.

The issues raised by the commission will be considered by my Department and the Department of Transport in the context of the forthcoming codification of the licensing laws. My intention is that an outline of the codification Bill will be available by mid-2004.
