Vol. 571 No. 4

Written Answers. - Garda Investigations.

Aengus Ó Snodaigh

Question:

473 Aengus Ó Snodaigh asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the unsolved murders for the past 10 years by victim's name and policing district; the status of each case including whether the file is closed; the steps being taken in each case to close these files; and the meaning of the term, pursued vigorously, as used by Minister of State Willie O'Dea in a newspaper (details supplied) on 20 July 2003 in relation to unsolved killings. [21934/03]

All incidents of unlawful killing are the subject of exhaustive investigation by the Garda. All contributory facts, causes and aspects of the crimes are considered in the course of these extensive investigations.

These investigations are undertaken by divisional and district officers at local level. All the necessary technical services are available to these investigations. National units such as the national bureau of criminal investigations and the national drugs unit are available to assist where necessary. All available resources are employed in respect of all murders to bring these investigations to a successful conclusion.

The files in undetected murders are not closed until they are investigated to a successful conclusion. All new evidence coming to light in these murders is acted upon.

The following tables show the number and location of all undetected murders from 1992 to 30 September 2003. It is not the practice when answering questions of a statistical nature to include details of the victims' names.
