Written Answers. - Sports Funding.

Charlie O'Connor

Question:

137 Mr. O'Connor asked the Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism the contacts he has had from South Dublin County Council checking potential funding options to provide a skateboard facility in Tallaght; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28803/03]

The national lottery-funded sports capital programme, which is administered by the Department, allocates funding to sporting and community organisations at local, regional and national level throughout the country. The programme is run on an annual basis.

A total of 1,337 applications for funding were received under the 2003 sports capital programme, of which 20 were for sporting projects from South Dublin County Council. The majority of these applications were for the development of playing pitches. One application was for the development of a skateboard park in north Clondalkin, with a site address of north Clondalkin park area, c/o South Dublin County Council, town centre, Tallaght, Dublin 24. The application was unsuccessful and a letter was issued to the council on 5 August, together with a copy of the assessment carried out on the application, including specific reasons for it being unsuccessful.

The 2004 sport capital programme will be advertised this weekend and it will be open to South Dublin County Council to make an application for funding for the project under the programme. A total of nine projects submitted by South Dublin County Council were successful under the 2003 sports capital programme and these received €343,000 in funding.
