Vol. 576 No. 3

Written Answers. - Radon Gas Levels.

Bernard Allen

Question:

74 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Education and Science the primary and second level schools that have been found with radon levels above 200; the 500 schools that have not responded to the invitation to have radon measurements carried out; and the steps he has taken to ensure that these schools comply with his request in view of the risk to the health of pupils. [29542/03]

At the request of my Department, the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland, has recently contacted the 565 schools that have not been tested for radon, stressing the importance of assessing radon exposure of all staff and pupils, and has advised that my Department will meet the cost of the survey and subsequent remedial work. Testing of radon levels in these schools is due to commence in January 2004. A list of the primary and second level schools that were found to have radon levels above 200 Bq/m³ and the list of schools that have not yet been tested for radon, have been forwarded to the Deputy.
