Vol. 576 No. 6

Written Answers. - Dr. Neary Inquiry.

Liz McManus

Question:

205 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Health and Children the date set for the commencement of the inquiry into the procedures carried out on women at the hands of a person (details supplied) and others in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda; the justification for having this inquiry held in private rather than in public as requested; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [30233/03]

I met again representatives from Patient Focus on 25 November, 2003. I informed the group that Judge Maureen Harding Clark has been selected to chair an inquiry into the issues raised by the Medical Council's report into the practice of Dr. Michael Neary. The format of the inquiry and its terms of reference are the subject of discussion between my Department and the Office of the Attorney General and I expect to be in a position to bring recommendations before Cabinet shortly. I will be meeting again with representatives of Patient Focus on 17 December 2003 to apprise them of progress in this regard.
