Vol. 36 No. 11

Death of a Minister—Expression of sympathy.

At the outset of the proceedings to-day I wish to advert to the recent lamented death of Mr. Tadhg Murphy, Minister for Local Government, and to give expression to the regret of the members of the Seanad on the passing away of a member of the Government and one who, as a member of the Dáil, was associated with the Parliamentary life of the country for the past 26 years. Mr. Murphy brought to the service of the State an alert intelligence, a deep knowledge and wide experience of local government, an absolute sincerity of purpose and a determination to spare himself in no way in the discharge of the duties of his office. At the same time he endeared himself to all by his gracious and unassuming manner and his integrity of character.

His loss will be felt by the Government and the community. To his widow and family his death comes as a very heavy loss. On your behalf I would like to convey to his relatives the deepest sympathy of all members of the Seanad.

Go ndéanaidh Dia trócaire ar a anam.

Senators rose in their places.
