Vol. 57 No. 5

Summer Time Order, 1963—Motion of Approval.

I move:—

That Seanad Éireann hereby approves the Summer Time Order, 1963, made by the Minister for Justice under the Summer Time Act, 1925 (No. 8 of 1925).

In view of the fact that the Summer Time Order has been welcomed in recent years, may I ask is it contemplated that instead of summer time ending in October, it should be extended throughout the winter? Are any investigations being made into that?

As everybody knows, we are an independent Republic, masters of our destiny, and so on, but it is very important in this matter of summer time that we have more or less the same arrangements as they have in Britain because of train schedules, shipping schedules, et cetera. All these things are affected and therefore it is not something we can lightly consider doing on our own. If we wanted to do anything like that, we might have to try to persuade the British to do the same thing. If they did anything like that, we could think of following their example.

Question put and agreed to.
