Seanad Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 1 Mar 1978

Vol. 88 No. 7

Business of Seanad.

I have considered a request from Senator Martin to raise, on the motion for the Adjournment this evening, the following matter:

The threatened closure of Dominican Convent, Eccles Street, Dublin and the future role of religious privately-owned schools in Irish education.

I rule that this matter is not suitable for discussion on the Adjournment on the grounds that (a) there is no ministerial responsibility involved in the decision to close private schools and (b) the general question of the future role of religious privately-owned schools in Irish education is one that should come forward by way of substantive motion.

Naturally I bow to your ruling on the matter but surely the finding of 800 places for 800 children, should the school be closed, would be a ministerial responsibility.

I am sorry, but the Chair has ruled as already stated and there cannot be any further discussion on the matter.

Is it not possible to ask for an explanation regarding the terms of the refusal?

The Senator can discuss it with me privately, if he wishes, and I shall help him in any way I can to get the motion in.
