Seanad Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 7 Feb 1996

Vol. 146 No. 3

Business of Seanad.

I have notice from Senator Cotter that, on the motion for the Adjournment of the House today, he proposes to raise the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Education to examine the possibility of increasing the grant aided financial assistance which is made available to post-graduate students involved in research programmes in the various higher education colleges and universities.

I have also received notice from Senator Henry on the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Enterprise and Employment to ensure that the health and safety regulations are enforced in places of public entertainment, particularly the provision of basic sanitary services.

I have also received notice from Senator Honan on the following matter:

To ask the Minister for Health when he proposes to introduce the child abuse register as recommended in the report on the Kilkenny incest case.

I have also received notice from Senator Cosgrave on the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Education to ensure that Dún Laoghaire/ Rathdown County Council retains its vocational education committee committee in light of the new boundaries.

I have also received notice from Senator Rory Kiely on the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht to ensure balance in the coverage by RTE of race meetings; for example the non-coverage of Limerick races at Christmas despite the cancellation of Leopardstown races.

I have also received notice from Senator Daly on the following matter:

To ask the Minister for Energy if he will ensure that completion of the fourth phase works at Moneypoint power station will be considered in conjunction with other proposals by the ESB for the further provision of generation capacity.

I regard the matters raised by Senator Cotter, Senator Henry, Senator Honan and Senator Cosgrave as suitable for discussion on the Adjournment. I have selected Senator Cotter's and Senator Henry's matters and they will be taken at the conclusion of business. I regret I had to rule the matters raised by Senator Daly and Senator Kiely as not suitable for discussion on the Adjournment on grounds of lack of ministerial responsibility.

I cannot understand how there can be a lack of ministerial responsibility when there is an item on the Order Paper dealing with broadcasting.

We cannot discuss the matter now.
