Máire Geoghegan-Quinn giving the Seachtain na Gaeilge lecture in Leinster House

Máire Geoghegan-Quinn gave a lecture in Leinster House today to mark Seachtain na Gaeilge. The special lecture was part of the Vótáil 100 commemoration of the centenary of the parliamentary vote for women.

The former TD and Minister spoke on the importance of our national language to her and in her work. She also spoke about her life and career in Irish and European politics.

First elected to Dáil Éireann in 1975, Máire Geoghegan-Quinn was the second woman to serve as a Government ministry, after Countess de Markievicz. She went on to hold several ministries over more than two decades in parliamentary politics. Máire Geoghegan-Quinn was also Ireland’s first female European Commissioner.
