Speech from 1918 by-election on display in Leinster House

4 May 2018, 17.17

Copy of Father O'Flanagan's suppressed speech

The Oireachtas Library & Research Service (L&RS) is exhibiting a copy of a campaign speech from the 1918 Cavan East by-election.

The speech, by Father Michael O’Flanagan, was in support of Arthur Griffith, the president of Sinn Féin, who went on to win the by-election.

The speech demonstrates the anti-conscription stance of Sinn Féin, a sentiment that set them apart from the faltering Irish Parliamentary Party and helped them sweep to victory in the general elections later that year.
