Ceann Comhairle expresses condolences on the death of Queen Elizabeth II

The Ceann Comhairle, Seán Ó Feargháil, TD, has written to the Speaker of the House of Commons, the Rt. Hon. Sir Lindsay Hoyle, MP, to express condolences on behalf of all Members of the Dáil on the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

Speaking of the late Queen, the Ceann Comhairle said:

As Head of State she demonstrated magnificent and inspirational leadership skills. Her commitment to public service and the quality and duration of that service is without equal.

He noted that the late Queen’s visit to Ireland in 2011 “marked a critical watershed in the relationship between our two islands.”

Responding to the correspondence, the House Speaker, the Rt. Hon. Sir Lindsay Hoyle, MP, thanked the Ceann Comhairle for his letter “at this saddest of times” by saying:

We would like to thank you, members of Dáil Éireann, and the many people of the Republic of Ireland for this show of support, gratitude and thanks [for] the work and life of Her late Majesty.

Separately, the Cathaoirleach of the Seanad, Senator Mark Daly, has written to the Lord Speaker, Lord John Francis McFall, to express condolences on behalf of all Members of the Seanad to the House of Lords on the Queen’s death.
