Committee on Jobs, Social Protection and Education to discuss use of IT in delivering Social Welfare services

28 Feb 2012, 16:01

Officials from the Department of Social Protection will appear before the Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Social Protection and Education tomorrow, 29th February, to discuss the use of technology in the delivery and processing of social welfare services with specific reference to the development of a national database.

Chairman of the Committee Deputy Damien English said: “The Department of Social Protection processes 87 million payments per year or nearly 250,000 per day. Tomorrow the Committee will meet with officials from the Department to discuss better use of IT to deliver these services. Given the major new focus on ‘activation’ and maintaining and enhancing anti-fraud measures, we will be interested in discussing how the systems are evolving to support the new role and what progress has been made on a national database with a single customer view.”

This meeting will take place on Wednesday, 29nd February in Committee Room 3, Leinster House 2000 at 9.30am.
