Photocall Notice: Launch of “Young Senator” Student Challenge

14 Nov 2012, 17:51

You are invited to attend, or send a representative, to the launch of the Seanad Éireann “Young Senator” Student Challenge for Transition Year students.

14 November 2012

The Challenge is open to all students currently in Transition Year (TY) and entries are now being accepted as a written or video essay. Cathaoirleach of the Seanad Paddy Burke will launch the Challenge with students from St Mary's College, Ballysadare, Co. Sligo tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. in Leinster House.

TY students across the country have been invited to address two topics as part of the competition:

  • Do you think the Leaving Certificate prepares you for life?
  • The challenges that face Ireland and does my future lie here?

A shortlist of entries will be chosen and those students will be invited to attend an event in Seanad Éireann in Spring 2013.
Event: Launch Young Senator Student Challenge

Location: The Plinth, Leinster House, Dublin 2
Date: Tomorrow, Thursday 15 November 2012
Time: 12:30 p.m.

Cathaoirleach of the Seanad Senator Paddy Burke says: “The aim of the challenge is to give students the opportunity to develop personal, social and educational skills while gaining a better understanding of how our parliament works.
“Participants are not expected to be political experts. Indeed, the topics we are inviting TY students to address are directly related to the opportunities and challenges they face in their current and future lives. We hope participants in the Challenge will broaden their knowledge and interest in the parliamentary process and we look forward to welcoming shortlisted speakers to the Seanad Chamber in the Spring.”

.

Following the photocall, Senator Burke and other Senators will be available for questions.
