Justice Committee has positive meeting with Members Designate of the Irish Human Rights Equality Commission

22 May 2013, 14:16

The Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality today, Wednesday, 22nd May 2013 had a very positive meeting with nominees for Members Designate of the Irish Human Rights Equality Commission.

Committee Chairman David Stanton, TD, said: “Today we had an enlightening and productive meeting with nominees for Members Designate of the Irish Human Rights Equality Commission. It was a chance to have a comprehensive and indepth discussion on the priorities and challenges for the Commission which replaces the Equality Authority and the Human Rights Commission.

On behalf of the Committee, I would like to thank the nominees for attending the Committee meeting today, congratulate them and wish them well on the challenging and important role they will have in the future. We were particularly heartened by their commitment to engage regularly with civil society and to raise the profile of the new organisation. In this regard, we’re looking forward to engaging with them on an on-going basis.

The Committee is also anxious that a Chief Commissioner will be appointed to the Commission as soon as possible.”
