Oireachtas Committee to hear from Minister Burton on State Pension eligibility

1 Oct 2013, 14:46

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on Public Service Oversight and Petitions will tomorrow afternoon meet with Minister for Social Protection for a discussion on policy issues relating to the revised eligibility criteria for the contributory State pension.

1 October 2013

Chairman of the Committee Pádraig Mac Lochlainn TD says: \"The Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton TD will tomorrow give the Committee an overview of the policy changes in the contributory State Pension in recent years. With the increased budgetary pressures on the Exchequer in recent years, Minister Burton is expected to outline the rationale for these changes.

“The meeting comes on foot of a number of petitioners which have complained about what they perceive as the unfair impact of these changes on their pensions and suggest that the introduction of key social welfare changes might be better implemented in a staggered fashion. While accepting the financial challenges facing the State, the Committee will be keen to assess what steps are taken to minimise the impact on individuals who stand to lose out in changes to welfare policy.”

The meeting takes place tomorrow Wednesday 2 October in Committee Room 3, LH 2000 at 4 pm. The meeting can be viewed online via this link.
