Joint Committee on Media, Tourism, Arts, Culture, Sport and the Gaeltacht to discuss impact of Covid-19 on Tourism Sector

1 Dec 2020, 12:23

The Joint Committee on Media, Tourism, Arts, Culture, Sport and the Gaeltacht will discuss the impact of Covid-19 on Tourism when it meets tomorrow, Wednesday, 2 December with representatives of Fáilte Ireland and Tourism Ireland.

The meeting at 2.00pm in Committee Room 3 of Leinster House will hear from Paul Kelly and Jenny De Saulles of Fáilte Ireland and Niall Gibbons of Tourism Ireland.

Committee Chair Deputy Niamh Smyth said: “Tourism plays a significant role in our economy and the sector has been devasted by Covid-19 due to the collapse in overseas travel to Ireland and the public health restrictions.

“More than 250,000 people work in tourism-related businesses and these jobs are at risk from the collapse in visitor numbers and revenue this year. The Committee looks forward to discussing with Fáilte Ireland and Tourism Ireland the impact of the pandemic and their strategies to help the sector recover in 2021 and beyond.”

The Joint Committee on Media, Tourism, Arts, Culture, Sport and the Gaeltacht has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.

The meeting in Committee Room 3 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
