Foreign Affairs Committee to hear from Russia’s Ambassador to Ireland and Ireland’s Permanent Representative to the UN

The Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs will hear from Russia’s Ambassador to Ireland, H.E Ambassador Yury Anatoliyevich Filatov and the Permanent Representative of Ireland to the United Nations, Geraldine Byrne Nason at a meeting in Leinster House, tomorrow, Thursday 17 December.

H.E. Yury Anatoliyevich Filatov will appear before the Committee at 11.30am.

Speaking before the meeting, Committee Chairman Charlie Flanagan TD said: “The Committee welcomes this engagement with Russia’s Ambassador to Ireland to discuss a number of issues including Russia’s bilateral relationship with Ireland and on a broader scale with the EU, trade, human rights and the current situation in Syria, Nagorno Karabakh, Belarus, the Ukraine and Georgia.”

Geraldine Byrne Nason will appear before the Committee for the second part of the meeting, virtually, from New York.

Deputy Flanagan said: “The Committee welcomes this engagement with Ambassador and Ireland’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Geraldine Byrne Nason. In January, Ireland commences its term as a member of the UN Security Council. The Committee looks forward to discussing with the Ambassador, preparations and priorities for the next two years. Ireland has a long established tradition of peace keeping and indeed peace building and this is a unique opportunity not only to participate but to take leadership. Ireland can make a real difference not only in areas of conflict but also ensuring that where hunger exists that food security remains an utmost priority. “
