Foreign Affairs Committee to focus on issues facing the people of Syria on 10th anniversary of conflict

8 Mar 2021, 12:55

The Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence will discuss issues facing the people of Syria on the 10th anniversary of the Syrian conflict with NGOs working in the area at a meeting in Leinster House tomorrow, Tuesday 9 March in Committee Room 4 at 12.30pm.

Speaking before the meeting, Committee Chairman Charlie Flanagan TD said: “It’s ten years since the conflict in Syria began. During that time hundreds and thousands of people have been killed and more than half of the population of 23 million people has been displaced from their homes. Four out of ten of the displaced, inside Syria and across the region are children.

“The Committee welcomes this engagement with organisations working on the frontline to hear about the reality of this conflict, the issues facing the people of Syria, the humanitarian work of aid organisations in the region and the challenges they are facing.”
