23 Mar 2021, 10:42

The Joint Committee on Housing, Local Government and Heritage will meet later today to discuss electoral reform when representatives from two organisations appear.

The meeting, scheduled for 6.30pm in Committee Room 3 (watch live), is a resumption of Pre-Legislative Scrutiny of the Electoral Reform Bill, with the Data Protection Commission and Digital Action attending.

In advance of the meeting, Committee Chair, Steven Matthews, TD, said: “The Committee looks forward to Tuesday’s resumption of this very important topic, which follows on from meetings with the Minister of State and Academic experts in this field.

“As was well documented, electoral reform is a significant commitment in the Programme for Government, and Tuesday’s witnesses will bring their expertise to a variety of topics. Confidence in our democracy is important, in terms of campaigning and the integrity of elections. Technology and Communications provides opportunities, but also realities worthy of further consideration, and with that in mind the appearance of representatives from the Data Protection Commission and Digital Action will be most timely.”
