School Bullying and the Impact on Mental Health Examination continues at Education Committee

1 Jun 2021, 11:20

The Joint Committee on Education, Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science will continue its discussion on School Bullying and the Impact on Mental Health with representatives from the Irish Primary Principals Network (IPPN); the National Association of Principals and Deputy Principals (NAPD); and the Association of Community and Comprehensive Schools (ACCS) at today’s meeting, 3:30 pm, Tuesday 1 June.

Today’s discussion is the fifth of a series of committee meetings that will see key stakeholders come before the committee through to the end of June.

Speaking in advance of the meeting, Cathaoirleach, Paul Kehoe TD, said: “The Committee continues its important discussion on School Bullying and the Impact on Mental Health. In our four previous meetings, the Committee got insight into the challenges faced in dealing with bullying and creating inclusive school cultures. We got to hear from students, Patron Bodies, psychologists and psychotherapists, and we will hear now from the bodies that represent Primary and Secondary School Principals and Deputy Principals.”

The Cathaoirleach added, “The Committee welcomes the chance to hear from the witnesses, which should further our understanding of what is really going on in our schools; how we can help the whole school community; and if there are changes we need to consider to help tackle these issues and to continue to create an inclusive culture for students in our schools.”

The meeting at 3:30 pm will be broadcast from Committee Room 4 of Leinster House.

The Joint Committee on Education, Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.
