Foreign Affairs Committee to discuss plight of Yazidis in Iraq

14 Jun 2021, 14:26

The Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence will discuss the plight of the Yazidis in Iraq at a meeting in Leinster House, Committee Room 2, tomorrow, Tuesday 15 June at 12.30pm.

Head of Yazda UK and Ireland Ahmed Khudida and John Gallagher Yazda UK and Ireland; Natia Navrouzov Yazda Worldwide; and Nasreen, Yazidi Survivors Network (YSN) will appear virtually before the Committee for the meeting.

Committee Cathaoirleach Charlie Flanagan TD said: “The ISIS attack on the Sinjar region of northern Iraq in August 2014 led to the displacement of almost the entire Yazidi community. There were large-scale massacres of thousands of Yazidi men and boys and thousands of Yazidi women and girls were abducted and forced into marriage or sexual slavery.

“About 200,000 Yazidis are currently displaced and several thousand more are missing. The Committee welcomes tomorrow’s engagement with Yazda support organisations to hear about the current plight of the Yazidi survivors and the work being done to help victims recover from the attack, their fight for justice and pursuit at national and international levels for accountability.”
