Education Committee discuss Traveller Education with reference to Inequality, the Digital Divide, and the Impact of Reduced Timetables

The Joint Committee on Education, Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science will discuss Traveller Education with reference to Inequality, the Digital Divide, and the Impact of Reduced Timetables at tomorrow’s meeting, 3:30 pm, Tuesday 29 June.

Tomorrow’s meeting will be broadcast from Committee Room 4 of Leinster House.

The Committee will hear from the following organisations: the Irish Traveller Movement, the National Traveller Women’s Forum and Pavee Point.

Speaking in advance of the meeting, Cathaoirleach, Paul Kehoe TD, said: “The Committee will take the opportunity to discuss Traveller Education with specific reference to important issues of Traveller Inequality in Education, the Digital Divide and Reduced Time Tables in Schools.”

The Cathaoirleach added, “The Committee is looking forward to discussing the key issues affecting Traveller Education with representative Groups who work consistently to raise and bring forward solutions to issues that affect members of the Traveller Community’s educational opportunities. The Committee hopes to discuss issues such as lack of access to broadband and digital devices and the need to bring forward Procedures so that Reduced Timetables are used correctly, with an overall aim to ensure Traveller Children,  Young People and other Traveller learners can benefit from an education that enhances their life chances.”

The meeting at 3:30 pm will be broadcast from Committee Room 4 of Leinster House.

The Joint Committee on Education, Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.
