6 Jul 2021, 14:43

The Joint Committee on Social Protection, Community and Rural Development and the Islands will meet the chairpersons designate of the Citizens Information Board and the Pensions Council at a meeting in Leinster House, tomorrow, Wednesday, 7 July at 9.30am.

Citizens Information Board chairperson designate Catherine Heaney and Pensions Council chairperson designate Roma Burke will appear virtually before the meeting.

Committee Cathaoirleach Denis Naughten TD said: “The Committee welcomes this engagement with both Catherine Heaney and Roma Burke as they prepare to embark on their new roles with the Citizens Information Board and Pensions Council respectively.

“The Citizens Information Board is the national agency responsible for supporting the provision of information, advice and advocacy on social services, and for the provision of the Money Advice and Budgeting Service. With the widespread issue of disinformation and misinformation, and the ongoing pandemic which has left so many people in need of information from trusted sources,  the role of the Citizens Information Board is crucial for citizens looking for a trusted source of information.

“The Pensions Council was set up to advise the Minister for Social Protection on matters relating to policy on pensions. The Council represents and protects the consumer interest and help to ensure that the system has a far stronger consumer focus. Among the significant work it is undertaking at present the Council is currently considering the gender pensions gap in supplementary pensions and is working to identify practical solutions to this challenge

“The Committee looks forward to this engagement to learn about the career backgrounds of the new appointees and to hear Catherine Heaney’s objectives over the next five years for the Citizens Information Board and Roma Burke’s objectives for the Pensions Council.”

The meeting is taking place in Committee Room 3. View the Committee live.
